I have always loved to sing. And if you don’t hear me singing, I am humming. And if you don’t hear me singing or humming, I am doing one or the other in my head! Music is a joy to the soul.

 

So, a little over a year ago I suggested we start an Acappella singing group at our church. We are a small church and found about a dozen folks who were interested. We all enjoy singing together but found singing without music and singing our part was way more difficult than expected. We found some success and our church family loves hearing from us so we were encouraged to continue. But we found singing without music so difficult that it wasn’t as fun as it should be. For myself, I felt that I really needed the ability to hear myself sing the part with the recording. I was having trouble hearing myself and not as sure as I wanted to be about hitting the correct note.

 

Then comes Mother’s Day 2025. The love of my life who always finds a way to give the gift of music, set me up with a microphone and equipment so I could sing to songs hearing them in my headphones and hearing myself sing. The first time I really heard my voice in professional studio headphones over professional studio monitors singing with other singers…it was almost like hearing my voice for the first time. I immediately found that my voice and tone got better. I could hear things I could not hear before and I felt like I was singing cleaner, with more control. And I now have a true road map for improvement in my vocals but mostly in my confidence grounded in “reality”.

 

My excitement in this new found discovery gave me the idea of how great it would be for my brothers and sisters in Christ, who love to sing and love song and maybe don’t think they can sing or don’t like the way they sound, to come and experience singing and song in this new way. I truly believe it will be a game changer and if one feels comfortable and confident with their voice, they can explore and expose their full self in song to the Lord. In everything you do, do as if unto the Lord Jesus!
